What Are the Symptoms of Tooth Infection?

Posted on 8/21/2023 by Dr Anthony Bouneff
What Are the Symptoms of Tooth Infection?A bacterial infection in the tooth will form a pocket of pus in the tooth referred to as absence. This abscess will form at different parts of the tooth, including at the root of the tooth, in the gum, or on the side of the root.
Normally, a tooth infection will affect the oral tissues, but if not treated, it can easily spread to other areas of the body. Poor oral hygiene is one of the leading causes of tooth infection. People who smoke and those who have a dry mouth are also at risk of infection.

Symptoms of Tooth Infection

Intense pain in the tooth or jaw can be a sign of tooth infection. Other common symptoms include bad breath, cheek swelling, teeth sensitivity, bad breath, and fever. A tooth infection can also cause a feeling of general discomfort or illness.

As stated before, if we leave the infection untreated, it may spread to the whole body. Once it does, you will experience headaches, fatigue, dizziness, sweating, chills, and even increased heart rates.

Causes of Tooth Infection

There are many reasons why you may develop a tooth infection, but one of the major causes is poor dental hygiene. If you do not brush your teeth and floss daily, bacteria will build up eventually, leading to infections. Xerostomia, which is a dry mouth, can also cause infection. This is because bacteria grow rapidly in dry environments. A high-sugar diet will also contribute to tooth infections because high-sugar diets will lead to cavities. If we leave these cavities untreated, it will undoubtedly cause tooth infections.

Treatment for Tooth Infection

Your dentist may use the incision and drainage method to treat your infection. This is where the dentist cuts into the pocket where the pus has collected and drains it. A root canal is also another common treatment method. It is a great way to ensure that the dentist can save the tooth. The dentist will drain out all the infected pulp and then fill the area to stop any infections.

A tooth infection can cause so much discomfort and pain. Thus, it is important to not only ensure that you maintain a good oral hygiene routine but also stay away from sugary foods as they can cause cavities.
