Sedation Dentistry Hillsboro, ORWhile we love our jobs and love coming into our office every day, we understand that some people experience a degree of anxiety. That is why here at Beaverton Oral Surgeons we offer a variety of sedation options, so that every visit is worry-free. The Basics of Sedation DentistryWe want you to feel comfortable during every visit to our office. Sedation dentistry is how we help many of our patients achieve that comfort, so they can look forward to their visit and leave feeling refreshed and rejuvenated. While sedation dentistry is commonly called sleep dentistry, it is actually more about helping take the edge off through soothing methods, rather than actually rendering you unconscious. Depending on your needs, we can employ sedation techniques for everything from a basic cleaning to a tooth extraction. The Four Methods of SedationNo matter how old you are or how you feel about going to the dentist, we have a sedation method that can help you. Nitrous oxide, also known as laughing gas, is one of the most frequently used because it acts quickly and wears off almost as fast, so there are no lingering effects. Oral sedation and IV sedation are both a step up from nitrous oxide. You will still be conscious, but probably will not remember much. With oral sedation you take a pill beforehand, while IV sedation requires an IV but works faster and gives us more precise control over your level of sedation. General anesthesia is the only method that can truly be called sleep dentistry. This puts you fully asleep, but we only use it in rare circumstances. How Sedation Can Benefit YouIf you are someone who experiences apprehension at the thought of visiting the dentist, or discomfort at the sounds and pressures that are present during many treatments, then sedation dentistry can make a major difference to you. Sedation can help you feel more at ease, both before and after your visit. Many children benefit from receiving a very safe, low-impact method like nitrous oxide. Sedation is also often used with patients that gag easily or have sensitive teeth. Is Sedation Safe?Yes! While nothing is a 100% guarantee, sedation methods have a long, successful, and well-studied history of use in dentistry. Every dental professional in our office who administers a sedative is fully qualified and trained in the safe usage of that sedative. Of course, you should never take medication without talking to your doctor or general health provider first. They know your overall health best and can help you decide what is right for you. We recommend extra care when looking at sedation dentistry if you are overweight or suffer from obstructive sleep apnea. Frequently, these conditions can negatively impact the efficacy of sedation methods, potentially requiring alternatives.
