Learn How Teeth Grinding Will Affect Your Overall Well BeingTeeth grinding also known as Bruxism is a condition in which one clenches their jaw, grinds or gnash their teeth consciously or unconsciously. There are two types of Bruxism, Sleep Bruxism in which you grind your teeth when you are asleep and Awake Bruxism whereby you do it when you are awake.

What Causes Teeth Grinding

There are several things that may cause Bruxism which may be physical, psychological, or genetic. Physical causes may be misaligned teeth, an abnormal bite, crooked or missing teeth while psychological ones are like stress, tension, concentration, and anxiety. Some medications like antidepressants also lead to teeth grinding when taken for a long period of time. Drug and substance abuse such as the use of cocaine, alcohol and cigarette smoking is also known to cause Bruxism.

Effects of Teeth Grinding

Chronic Bruxism may lead to a number of negative effects on your oral health such as painful jaws, jaw soreness, loose and fractured, chipped teeth and hurting of the joints that connect the jaws to the skull (Temporomandibular joints). This condition also causes exhaustion because you are not able to have a peaceful sleep and you feel the effect the following day when you wake up.

Treatment for Bruxism

As an adult, you may not know if you have this condition if it happens while you are asleep. It is therefore important to visit a dentist if you experience symptoms like headache when you wake up, painful jaws and pain in the face and teeth. If diagnosed with this condition, the doctor may prescribe a mouth guard to prevent damage and other dental procedures in case there is damage. Book an appointment with us any day and have our dentists answer all your questions and give you professional advice.
