Dental Work and Pregnancy

Posted on 5/9/2022 by Evan
Dental Work and PregnancyDental care should never stop throughout your pregnancy. Furthermore, it's critical to maintain good oral hygiene, affecting your general well-being. Pregnant women are susceptible to tooth decay, gum diseases, and other dental problems. While many people believe visiting the dentist while pregnant is risky to the child, we recommend frequent visitation for dental checkups even when pregnant. If left untreated, gum diseases and other oral health issues can be detrimental to your child's health.

Are x-rays safe to use when pregnant?

The risk of being exposed to radiation while pregnant has deterred many from visiting their dentists. Nonetheless, current dental x-rays expose the unborn to low quantities of radiation, and one dosage is rarely enough to impair the fetus' development. Our dentists use lead aprons and thyroid guards to prevent children's exposure to radiation.

Anesthetic use during pregnancy

Anesthetics are still safe for pregnant ladies to enable them to relax and brighten their dull discomfort. It's critical to inform the dentist of detailed information about your pregnancy so they can select preferred anesthetics and the set of acceptable doses. Our dentists reduce the anesthetic concentration as it contains substances that constrict blood vessels.

Does pregnancy gets affected by root canal?

When tooth decay gets to nerve endings, it is excruciating. Root canal therapy relieves discomfort by eliminating damaged tissue and restoring the tooth with a natural-looking crown, avoiding extraction. A root canal can also be performed at any stage of pregnancy in the event of a dental emergency and should never be postponed. However, due to x-rays, we advise performing dental surgery during the 2nd trimester. If the root canal does not require an x-ray, the treatment may proceed.

Our offices are open for a planned consultation where we offer various plans for your dental health care and advice on the best time to have dental work during pregnancy. Contact us now and have your appointment scheduled.
