Will I need a dental implant if I have a cracked tooth?

A dentist with an educational model of dental implants shares the benefits of implants with a patient.Cracked teeth are a pretty common problem. They can happen from chewing hard foods, grinding your teeth, or even just from normal wear and tear over time. If you've got a cracked tooth, you're probably wondering what your options are, and whether that means you’re headed for a dental implant. Let's break down what happens when a tooth cracks and what that might mean for your future dental health.

What Happens When a Tooth Cracks?

Think of your teeth like any other part of your body – they're strong, but they're not invincible. A crack in a tooth can range from a tiny, superficial craze line that doesn't cause any problems to a deep fracture that extends down into the root. The severity of the crack really dictates what kind of treatment is needed.

Small cracks, often called craze lines, are super common in adults. They usually don't cause any pain or sensitivity and often don't require any treatment at all. Your dentist will just keep an eye on them during your regular checkups.

However, deeper cracks are a different story. These cracks can cause pain when you chew, especially when you release the biting pressure. You might also experience sensitivity to hot or cold temperatures. If the crack extends into the pulp (the inner part of the tooth that contains nerves and blood vessels), it can lead to inflammation or even infection.

When Can a Cracked Tooth Be Saved?

The good news is that not every cracked tooth needs to be extracted. Dentists have several ways to try and save a cracked tooth, depending on the location and severity of the crack.

•  Dental Filling or Crown: If the crack is relatively small and doesn't extend too far, a filling or crown might be enough to protect the tooth and prevent the crack from getting worse. The filling or crown acts like a helmet, holding the tooth together and distributing biting forces evenly.
•  Root Canal: If the crack has reached the pulp and caused inflammation or infection, a root canal might be necessary. During a root canal, the infected pulp is removed, and the inside of the tooth is cleaned and sealed. This can relieve pain and save the tooth from extraction.

When is Extraction and a Dental Implant Necessary?

Unfortunately, some cracked teeth are simply too damaged to be saved. If the crack extends deep below the gum line or if the tooth is severely fractured, extraction might be the only option.

So, where do dental implants come in? A dental implant is an artificial tooth root that is surgically placed into the jawbone. After the implant has fused with the bone, a replacement tooth (crown) is attached to the implant. Dental implants are a great option for replacing missing teeth because they look, feel, and function like natural teeth. They also help to prevent bone loss in the jaw.

If your cracked tooth needs to be extracted, your dentist will likely discuss dental implants with you as a potential replacement option. However, it's important to remember that not everyone is a good candidate for dental implants. Factors such as bone density, overall health, and commitment to good oral hygiene all play a role in determining whether dental implants are the right choice.

What's the Next Step?

If you think you have a cracked tooth, the best thing to do is see your dentist as soon as possible. They can examine your tooth, take X-rays, and determine the best course of treatment. Early diagnosis and treatment are key to saving a cracked tooth and preventing further complications. Don't wait until the pain becomes unbearable – schedule an appointment today!
