Problems with Exercising Too Soon Following an Extraction

Posted on 6/2/2025 by Beaverton Oral Surgeons
Joggers on pathGetting a tooth extracted can be a stressful experience, and you're probably eager to get back to your normal routine as soon as possible. However, it's important to give your body time to heal properly before engaging in strenuous activities like exercise.

Why You Need to Rest

Following a tooth extraction, a blood clot forms in the empty socket where your tooth once was. This clot is essential for the healing process, as it protects the underlying bone and allows new tissue to grow. If you exercise too soon after your extraction, the increased blood flow can dislodge the clot, leading to a painful condition called dry socket.

Dry socket can delay healing by several weeks and cause significant discomfort. It can also increase your risk of infection.

How Long Should You Wait?

The amount of time you need to rest before exercising depends on the type of extraction you had and your overall health. In general, it's best to avoid strenuous activity for at least 24 hours after your extraction.

For more complex extractions, such as wisdom teeth removal, your oral surgeon may recommend a longer rest period of up to a week. It's important to follow your surgeon's instructions carefully.

What Activities Should You Avoid?

During the healing period, it's important to avoid any activities that could increase blood flow to your head and face. This includes:

•  Strenuous exercise: Running, biking, swimming, weightlifting, and other high-impact activities should be avoided.
•  Heavy lifting: Avoid lifting anything heavier than 10 pounds.
•  Bending over: This can increase pressure in your head and dislodge the blood clot.
•  Smoking and using straws: These activities can create suction in your mouth, which can also dislodge the clot.
•  Chewing on the extraction site: This can irritate the healing tissues.

Tips for a Smooth Recovery

Here are some tips to help you recover smoothly from your tooth extraction:

•  Get plenty of rest. Your body needs time to heal, so make sure to get plenty of sleep and rest in the days following your extraction.
•  Eat soft foods. Avoid hard, crunchy, or spicy foods that could irritate the extraction site.
•  Drink plenty of fluids. This will help to prevent dehydration and promote healing.
•  Take pain medication as directed. Your oral surgeon will prescribe pain medication to help you manage discomfort.
•  Follow your oral surgeon's instructions carefully. This is the best way to ensure a smooth and successful recovery.

When to Seek Help

If you experience any of the following symptoms after your tooth extraction, contact your oral surgeon immediately:

•  Excessive bleeding
•  Severe pain that is not controlled by medication
•  Swelling that worsens after 2-3 days
•  Pus drainage from the extraction site
•  Fever

By following these tips and listening to your body, you can help ensure a smooth and successful recovery from your tooth extraction. Remember, taking the time to heal properly will allow you to get back to your normal activities, including exercise, sooner.
