Controlling Bleeding Following Oral Surgery Can Be Difficult

Posted on 5/15/2025 by Dr Anthony Bouneff
Female patient consulting with a dentist about severe tooth pain during an emergency dental appointment in a clinic.Anyone who has undergone oral surgery knows it takes time to heal. During this time, you may experience some bleeding, which is completely normal. However, controlling that bleeding can be tricky. Today, we'll discuss why controlling bleeding after oral surgery can be difficult and offer some tips to help you manage it effectively.

Why is Controlling Bleeding Difficult?

Several factors can make it difficult to control bleeding after oral surgery. These include:

•  The location of the surgery: Bleeding is more likely to occur in areas with a good blood supply, such as the back of the mouth.
•  The type of surgery: More invasive surgeries, like tooth extractions, tend to bleed more than less invasive procedures.
•  Your individual health: Certain medical conditions, such as hemophilia or diabetes, can make it harder for your blood to clot.
•  Medications: Some medications, like blood thinners, can increase your risk of bleeding.

Tips for Managing Bleeding After Oral Surgery

Here are some tips to help you manage bleeding after oral surgery:

•  Follow your surgeon's instructions carefully. This includes taking any prescribed medications and avoiding strenuous activity.
•  Apply a cold compress to the area. This can help to reduce swelling and bleeding.
•  Bite down on a gauze pad. This will help to apply pressure to the bleeding site.
•  Avoid rinsing your mouth vigorously. This can dislodge the blood clot and start the bleeding again.
•  Drink plenty of fluids. This will help to keep your mouth moist and prevent blood clots from forming.
•  Eat soft foods. This will help to avoid irritating the surgical site.
•  Avoid alcohol and smoking. These substances can irritate the surgical site and increase your risk of bleeding.
•  Contact your surgeon if you have any concerns. If you experience excessive bleeding, pain, or swelling, contact your surgeon immediately.

Remember, It Takes Time to Heal

It's important to remember that it takes time to heal after oral surgery. Be patient and follow your surgeon's instructions carefully. If you have any concerns, don't hesitate to reach out to your surgeon for advice.
