Biopsy Techniques Used in OMS

Posted on 6/3/2024 by Beaverton Oral Surgeons
Woman in dental chair speaking with dentist at Beaverton Oral Surgeons in Hillsboro, ORA biopsy involves removing a small sample of tissue for laboratory testing. This is done when abnormalities like lesions or growths appear suspicious to determine if they are benign or malignant. Oral and maxillofacial surgeons (OMS) use specialized techniques to perform biopsies in the mouth and jaw region.

Incisional Biopsy

An incisional biopsy extracts a small portion of the abnormal tissue for analysis. The surgeon numbs the area and then uses a scalpel to precisely cut and remove a sliver of tissue. Just enough tissue is taken to get an accurate diagnosis.

Excisional Biopsy

An excisional biopsy removes the entire abnormal growth in one piece. After numbing, the surgeon cuts out the entire lesion with a margin of normal tissue around it. This is sent for pathology testing to eliminate the lesion.

Punch Biopsy

A punch biopsy uses a sharp, hollow instrument to extract a circle of tissue. The surgeon rotates the punch tool to cut through the deeper layers of the growth and extract a cylindrical core of tissue, leaving a round incision.

Brush Biopsy

A brush biopsy uses a soft brush or swab to collect a tissue sample from lesions. The brush rubs cells off the surface of the suspicious area, which adheres to the brush. This is a simple, noninvasive method.

Fine Needle Aspiration

Fine needle aspiration passes a thin needle into the lesion to draw out cells. The needle is moved in and out of the target area to dislodge cells suctioned into a collection tube for analysis. This causes minimal damage.

Bone Biopsy

A bone biopsy may be performed for jaw lesions. A small trephine drill extracts a core sample of bone tissue. For bone marrow biopsies, a needle aspiration draws liquid marrow to evaluate blood disorders.

Our oral surgeon will select the most appropriate biopsy method based on the location of the lesion and its characteristics. Biopsies provide essential information to plan proper treatment for abnormal oral growths.
