Common Dental Problems And Their Treatments

Common Dental Problems And Their TreatmentsPeople minimize the importance of oral and dental health not knowing that it contributes to one's overall well-being. We are advised to take good care of our teeth and oral hygiene. However, sometimes problems still occur. It is thus important to spot underlying problems and seek medical help soonest.

Ever heard of tooth cavity?

Tooth cavities occur when there is an accumulation of plaque. Plaque produces an acid that causes damage to the enamel and thus forming holes in the teeth. The bacteria responsible for eating away at the teeth are found in sugary foods and starches. Ensuring that you take a healthy and balanced diet is paramount in limiting this kind of exposure. Tooth cavities are largely dependent on your lifestyle. The treatment option available is tooth filling and repair. The risk of leaving tooth decay untreated for a long time is that it could lead to an infection or an abscess.

Gingivitis versus Periodontitis?

Gum disease comes in different types. Gingivitis is characterized by swelling and irritation. The swelling happens when plaque amasses and thus infects the gums. If left untreated, gingivitis can rapidly progress to periodontitis which is characterized by bleeding gums, pain while chewing, and tooth loss. The treatment is to have your teeth deep cleaned regularly by the dentist. Deep cleaning involves root planning and scaling to reverse gum disease. Antibiotics are also a viable option in addressing the infection.

Tooth sensitivity

Tooth sensitivity is very common and is associated with pain or discomfort when taking cold/hot drinks, sweets, or even cold air. Normally, when the enamel is damaged, this causes substances to reach the nerve endings and thus causing sensitivity. The sensitivity makes brushing and flossing quite painful. Sensitivity is one of the signs that dentist attribute to either a cracked or abscessed tooth. The remedy for sensitive teeth is varied depending on the root cause. Sealants and fillings are the most viable treatment options. If you are having sensitive teeth, cavities or other dental problems kindly consider reaching out to our dentist for immediate assistance.
