What Happens If Tooth Infection Is Left Untreated?

Posted on 6/5/2023 by Dr Anthony Bouneff
What Happens If Tooth Infection Is Left Untreated? When you have a scratch or slight injury, you will likely delay considering treatment, but it should not be the case when experiencing dental pains. Never postpone visiting a dentist when you notice gum inflammation or experience a severe toothache. Why? A dental injury can open the door to bacterial infections such as a periapical abscess. If a tooth infection goes untreated for long, it can have severe and life-threatening consequences. Below are some of them.

Jawbone Deterioration

The landing point of the bacteria when they attack your teeth is the jawbone. They will go to this bone for food. The result will be a bone infection or Osteomyelitis. This bacterial infection deteriorates the structure of your jawbone. This leads to a weak jawbone which can result in tooth loss.

Blood Vessels Infection

If untreated, bacteria causing tooth infection will migrate to your blood and the body. They will access your blood vessels leading to infections such as Cavernous Sinus Thrombosis. This condition results in blood clots in your brain and other facial disorders. Blood vessel infections are life-threatening and will lead to death if not treated promptly.

Sepsis

Sepsis is another lethal impact when you delay treating an infection in your tooth. The bacteria gets into and spreads in your bloodstream and immune system, causing inflammation and artery blockage. It can also cause the rapture of your organs. When you fail to treat sepsis on time, it leads to low blood pressure and liver failure. All these conditions are life-threatening.

As noted, delaying the treatment of tooth infection can have regrettable consequences. You can save yourself from consequential health problems by treating dental infections on time. Visiting a dentist whenever you experience a toothache or gum inflammation will save your life and money. Consider visiting our offices for advice and treatment if you have any dental issues.
