The Link between Diet and Dental Health

Posted on 5/22/2023 by Dr Anthony Bouneff
The Link between Diet and Dental HealthThere is a significant link associated between diet and dental health. What we consume as food and drinks impact our dental health. Below are some ways diet and dental health relate to each other and how they affect dental health.

Tooth Decay

Diets that are high in sugar and acidic level leads to tooth decay. The sugar supports bacteria growth which causes tooth cavities. The acids attack the tooth enamel and erode it, thus weakening it, which makes it susceptible to attack by bacteria and sensitivity. The more we consume sugary and acidic foods such as sodas, fruit juice, and sweets and candies, the more vulnerable our dental health is to bacteria attack, leading to tooth decay and open access to gum diseases.

Gum Disease

Diets with few vitamins and minerals such as vitamin C, calcium, and phosphorus increase the risk of developing gum disease. The vitamins and minerals are essential for teeth tissue strengthening, protecting the gums, and keeping gums healthy; thus, when they are not present in the teeth, they lead to gum problems, making it easy for bacteria to attack.

Enamel Erosion

Regularly consuming acidic foods and drinks erode the tooth enamel, making it vulnerable to bacterial attack. Eventually, the teeth become sensitive to cold and hit food and drinks, causing the production of a painful sensation when we consume drinks and foods.

Jawbone Health

It is necessary to eat and consume essential foods that are rich in nutrients to maintain jawbone health. Jawbone supports the teeth and leads to proper alignment of the teeth; thus, poor diets can lead to the eating away of the jawbone and cause tooth misalignment.

In summary, healthy, nutritious foods and a balanced diet are necessary to maintain good dental health. It's also necessary to reduce the intake of sugary and acidic foods and maintain good dental hygiene, thus preventing tooth decay and gum disease.
