The Sugar Wars: How To Handle Sugary SnacksParents and caregivers want what's best for their babies and children. You try to feed your kids a healthy diet, rich is vitamins and minerals, and you try to steer them away from foods that aren't as good for them. No matter how much you try to keep them away from sugar, it is a difficult battle. Here is some information about how to handle the battle for sugar.

Why Sugar Isn't Great

There are a lot of reasons why sugar isn't great for kids. However, when you're talking about sugar and oral health, it's nothing but trouble. Sugar provides an excellent food source for bacteria that live in your mouth all the time. The more sugar you eat, the more likely you are to get cavities, which are a direct result of the bacteria in your mouth. Kids who have untreated cavities can begin a path of a lifetime of dental issues.

How to Deal With the Sugar Issue

As a parent, you don't want to deny your child the fun of having cookies, cakes, ice cream, and other sugary snacks, every once in a while. However, how can you minimize the amount of sugar your child is consuming? Here are some tips.

Try to prevent babies and toddlers from consuming sugar. The longer you can hold off refined (white) sugar from entering your child's diet, the less likely they are to develop a craving for it. Provide sweeten treats with “natural” sugars, such as honey, monk fruit, or unrefined sugar if necessary. Give your kids the opportunity to try treats occasionally. Save the sugar for special occasions, such as birthdays. Also, eat a healthy, balanced sugar-free diet yourself. Kids model what they see.

With any luck, you'll be able to regulate your child's sugar intake without depriving them of an occasional treat.
