Gum Disease and How It Starts

Posted on 1/9/2023 by Dr Anthony Bouneff
Gum Disease and How It StartsOur gums are the roots and foundation of our teeth. If we don't take good care of them, we are libel to lose our teeth slowly over time. As such, it is important to know how periodontitis, or gum disease, starts and how to stop it.

A Very Unhealthy Snowball Effect

Gum disease all begins with plaque. Plaque build-up comes from starches and sugars of any form in the mouth. Plaque develops very quickly, which is why it is crucial to floss daily and brush twice a day. The more effort you put in to maintain those habits of brushing and flossing, the less plaque will plague you.

Over time, if not treated, plaque can turn into tartar. Tartar is significantly more difficult to remove and contains bacteria. You cannot remove tartar with any home remedies, but only by a professional dental cleaning. Removing tartar early is key to good dental health. However, if tartar remains untreated, it leads to gingivitis, the mildest form of gum inflammation. Regular oral hygiene and going to see your dentist regularly is a good way to combat gum inflammation.

If gum inflammation does not receive treatment for extended periods of time, it can turn into periodontitis, which is where pockets of plaque, tartar, and bacteria erode at your gums. Over time, these pockets become bigger and deeper, and put your teeth at more risk. If left untreated, you could lose one or more teeth. If you are struggling with gum disease of any form, or are curious about ways you can combat gum disease from home, please contact our office. We will be able to tell you what steps you can take at home to fight gum disease or we will have you come in to receive professional medical help.
