Four Homecare Instructions for Braces

Four Homecare Instructions for BracesAfter you get your new braces, it takes time to adjust. Your teeth may feel sensitive, and your gums and mouth may feel sore. This should be no concern since it takes time for your mouth to adjust to the wires and brackets adhered to your teeth. It is important to continue your oral hygiene and exercise more dental care during this period.

Brushing Regularly

Everyone appreciates clean teeth, fresh breath, and a great smile. It is, therefore, important to continue with your dental care routine. Brushing your teeth as regularly as twice a day is important to help keep your teeth clean. Cleaning around the wires and brackets of your braces helps eliminate debris and plaque, that if left unattended would harden to form tartar.

Flossing Regularly

Some people forget that flossing is integral to your daily oral hygiene. Floss your teeth once a day to remove debris that could be stuck between your teeth or around the wires of your braces. There is floss that is specially designed specifically for people with braces consisting of water flossers and other special tools. However, this does not mean you cannot use regular dental floss to clean your teeth.

Healthy Diet

A healthy diet during this period is even more important due to the complications of maintaining oral hygiene while wearing braces. Part of your healthy diet should be reducing your sugar intake. By cutting down on sugar, you avoid the risks of tooth decay due to the digestion of sugar by bacteria, forming acids that erode the tooth. Therefore, it is better for your teeth if you snack on healthy foods, like vegetables and fruits.

Replace Your Toothbrush

Your dentist recommends that you replace your toothbrush often due to wear. It is normal for toothbrushes to wear faster than normal due to braces; therefore, it is advisable to change them out more frequently. Better yet, get a special toothbrush, a Sonicare, that can clean around your braces.
